How exactly does home study work?

National Home Study courses are very similar in both content and quality as you would expect from your local college. However, unlike your local college, home study means that you work entirely from home, completely in your own time and without ever having to attend classes or lectures.

Distance learning allows you to study your course without being tied down to fixed terms, time limits and attending college. Study when and where it suits you. Once you have enrolled with us, you receive your course materials, text readers and your projects and assignments. You can now start your course whenever you wish. The majority of our students usually complete their course within six to twelve months of enrolment.

Who offers me any help, or advice and guidance whenever I need it?

Every student is allocated a personal tutor on enrolment. Your tutor is available by phone, fax or email whenever you need help, advice or reassurance. Expert and comprehensive tuition is only ever a phone call away and is a fully inclusive element of your course. Your tutor is always able to offer you encouragement, guidance, help and inspiration either by phone, fax or email.

If you're stuck on a particular project or assignment, we can usually provide sample papers/questions/answers for assistance. We pride ourselves on our tutorial support and advisory service, and will endeavour to provide every student with as much individual support as is necessary.

I haven't studied for years, and I'm worried that I won't be able to cope!

Please don't worry! No previous experience or qualifications are required to achieve your goals. Whilst experience is always of benefit, with National Home Study it is not a necessity. Our courses assume no previous knowledge and are written in plain and simple English. Our tutorial service offers comprehensive support and advice to all students, and is available by phone, fax or email.

Many of our students have not studied since leaving school and are perhaps looking to gain some qualifications after having spent time at home, perhaps after having brought up a family, or just looking for a career change.

What different subjects do you offer? And can I study subjects at different levels?

We have a wide and extensive range of courses that you can study, from archaeology and ancient history, to DIY skills, health and fitness and social care. For our full list of current courses, please see our online prospectus. The majority of the courses detailed on this site lead to a Level 3 diploma, issued by the National Home Study College. The National Home Study diploma is recognised proof of your ability and commitment, and is comparable in content and difficulty to other similar diplomas in these fields.

We also offer Specialised Study Programmes, Higher Diplomas and Fellowship Study Programmes. These courses are generally more comprehensive and specialised, and as such do require some previous study and/or subject knowledge. You can call our EnquiryLine or email us for more details on specific and higher level courses.

I'm dyslexic, can you help me?
Yes we can! We now offer "dyslexia-friendly" versions of all our standard level 3 diploma courses at no extra charge. You can enrol online by simply selecting the "dyslexia-friendly" option on our enrolment form, or you can enrol by phone or post if you'd prefer. For more information please click here >>

I notice that you are UK based, but I live overseas. Can I still study with you?

Absolutely. We have a significant amount of overseas students enrolled with us, from throughout Europe, Africa, America and the Middle East. Our courses are particularly popular with British Forces Posted Overseas. Course materials and other postings will obviously take a little longer to reach you, but contact with your tutor is particularly easy if you have access to email. Enrolment is easy too, by using our secure online facility. And even better, we don't charge postage for our overseas students like many other distance learning colleges do.*

What happens if I enrol on a course with you, but then decide it's not for me?

You can enrol in complete confidence with us. At National Home Study, we want you to stay fully committed to your studies. If you enrol on a course with us and then feel that it's not the right one for you, then we can upgrade you to a higher level or "swap" you to your chosen alternative subject. You can also put your course "on hold" if you wish, and resume your studies at a later date.

However if, during the twenty-eight days from the date of your enrolment, you decide that home study really isn't for you after all, then we will offer you a refund on your course fees. Certain restrictions may sometimes apply, please see our terms and conditions for full clarification of our refund policy.

I'm worried about enrolling online - is your site secure?

I don't want to enrol online. What other options are there for me?

If you'd prefer to talk to someone, you can enrol over the telephone. Simply give us a call on 0870 242 7141 during normal UK office hours (9am-5pm) and one of our student advisors will be ready to take your details. We can process your enrolment "live" whilst you are on the phone. This is also the ideal opportunity to ask us any questions you may have, either about the course itself, or home study in general.

If you are based outside the UK then you can call us on +44 20 8868 7136. Please remember to bear in mind any time differences!

We also offer a postal enrolment system for payments by cheque or postal order. Simply print off our postal application form, complete it and then send it off to us with your payment. Enrolling by post is also the ideal option if you don't have a credit card. Overseas students can also use our postal enrolment if they are paying by a sterling cheque or money order. See our how to enrol page for more comprehensive details.

What can I expect once I have enrolled on my course?

Once you have enrolled with us, you receive your course materials, text readers and your projects and assignments. You can now start your course whenever you wish. Please do allow around 7-10 working days for your course materials to arrive, especially if you are enrolling from overseas.

Projects and assignments are completed and returned to your tutor for assessment and marking. At the end of your course you have an examination assignment. Once you've successfully completed your course, you are issued with an overall pass grade and your diploma. It's as simple as that!

Whichever course you complete successfully, you'll be issued with your recognised Diploma.
